CAP Bicycle Campaign 2012


CAP together with the Department of Environment, Penang and the Penang Office of the Ministry of Domestic Trade, Co-operatives and Consumerism is organising the Bicycle Campaign 2012 in conjunction with this year’s World Environment Day on 15 July, 2012 at Kepala Batas, Penang.

Participation is free and open to all. Come and be part of the movement for good health and environmental and economic sustainability.

Beauty salons – come out with laws not guidelines

In 2009 CAP had raised its concerns about the ugly side of beauty salons and the price one has to pay for beauty.  We had asked the government to ban surgeries and other risky procedures at beauty salons.

More genuine efforts urgently needed to curb smoking

Seventy sen more for a packet of cigarettes. So what has this move done since it was implemented earlier this month? Has it got a lot of people to give up this evil, unhealthy and deadly habit? Or is it just earning the government more money?

Our contention, from years of studying the issue, is that 70sen more is not going to make any difference to the pocket of the smoker. It will, of course, earn more for those little shops in every neighbourhood that sell cigarettes out of the pack – one or two or more to the “occasional” smokers, and to the schoolchildren as well, who these days can be spotted smoking even in neighbourhood parks, and in their school uniforms too!

Call for true enforcement to reduce smoking

Smoking is bad for health, pure and simple. And yet measures taken to address the smoking pandemic in Malaysia seems conflicted – on one hand is the cost in human and health terms, while on the other side stifling government efforts are the apparent negative effect on tobacco farmers and poverty alleviation. The latter argument is flawed.

Alcoholic soft drinks - An Insidious way of creating a society of alcoholics

While the law clearly states that alcoholic beverages are prohibited for those below the age of 18, these drinks are being sold to school children without restraint in supermarkets and 24 hour outlets.
