A win for activists – Consumers Association Penang

SAM congratulates Hue Shieh Lee on her win in the Court of Appeal today against Raub Australian Goldmining Sdn Bhd. The Court of Appeal had dismissed RAGM’s defamation appeal against Hue Shieh Lee and commended the latter for bringing up the health problems of the villagers to the authorities.

SAM is very happy with the decision of the Court of Appeal where Justice David Wong Dak Wah in reading out the unanimous judgment in Court today, recognised the existence of activist groups and the important role they play in the country.

This decision goes to show the need for activists to continue being watchdogs in ensuring that environmental rights are upheld. More community leaders should come forward and act fearlessly when their rights are unreasonably thwarted or denied.
