The Consumers’ Association of Penang (CAP) welcomes the Penang state government’s efforts to provide housing at an affordable price for Penangites. A recent news article stated that the Penang Development Corporation’s (PDC) latest affordable housing project in Batu Kawan called Suria 2 would begin at the end of this year and that Suria 1 had already been completed.
The Suria affordable housing project in Batu Kawan seems to be not just about providing affordable housing to Penangites, but also about developing the Batu Kawan area further to make it an attractive area for Penangites to live in.
While this is a positive endeavour as it is important to develop all areas of Penang so that Penangites have more residential areas to live in, we ask that the Penang state government keep in mind these few things for their future efforts in providing affordable housing, which are: –
- To look at ways to continue providing affordable housing on the island as well.
- For federal land and state land meant for building affordable housing to be given to the state government / GLC’s such as PDC and not private companies to develop.
- For the authorities to monitor the affordable housing projects closely to ensure that contractors do not compromise on quality just because the project is labelled “affordable housing”.
- To implement more rent-to-own schemes so that even those in the lower tier of the B40 can eventually own their own houses.
