Cardamom has long been used in traditional medicine to help improve mental clarity and relieve stress. It is believed to have a calming effect on the mind and can help boost mood and reduce anxiety. This spice is used in Ayurvedic medicine to fight depression, stress and other mental health issues.

This and many other health benefits of cardamom are backed by science. In a 2016 study, rats with symptoms similar to post-traumatic stress disorder were given green cardamom extracts either before or after stressful sessions. In both treatments, anxiety-related behaviours improved in the cardamom-fed rats compared to rats not given the spice.

It is reported that the effect is probably due to quercetin, a flavonoid in cardamom.
