Eat fruits and vegetables of different colours every day. A diet rich in colourful foods or simply fruits and vegetables can reduce the risk of cancer and other chronic diseases.
Red, orange, yellow, green, white, blue and purple – each of these colours has health benefits, including: improved vision; decreased inflammation; reduced risk of chronic diseases, including cancer, heart disease and diabetes; and strengthened immune system (Mayo Clinic).
These benefits are due to the phytochemicals that occur naturally within these foods.
“Hundreds of phytonutrients have been found to have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity. Eating a variety of colourful fruits and vegetables throughout the day ensures we get a wide variety of the phytonutrients found in whole plant-based foods,” says Michael Greger, M.D.
