OVERCOME FLOOD PROBLEM IN KAMPUNG PADANG SERAI, PERAK IMMEDIATELY

Sahabat Alam Malaysia (SAM) urges the Perak State government, Manjung Municipal Council (MPM) and the Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) to take immediate action to overcome the problem of frequent flooding at Kampung Padang Serai near Pantai Remis here.

The floods have been ongoing since ten years ago but until now no action has been taken by the relevant authorities to identify the causes of the floods that has led to 20 families in this village to be hit by floods every monsoon season.

SAM’s survey found that the houses here were waterlogged and the drainage system in the area is not functioning properly. According to residents facing this problem the floods arise from the overflow of water from a nearby river.

In view of this SAM requests the state government, MPM and DID to conduct a thorough investigation in the affected areas to identify the cause of the frequent flooding in the village so that the problem can be dealt with effectively.

In addition to conducting a detailed study on why the river water in the area often overflows when it rains, the drainage system in the village also needs to be repaired so that the water flow will be smooth and not threaten surrounding houses.

SAM is disappointed that although this issue has been longstanding but no appropriate measures were taken by the authorities.

SAM is concerned that if this issue is neglected and not dealt with as soon as possible not only the property belonging to the residents here will suffer damage and greater loss but it can also cause environmental problems and affect the health of local residents.
