PROMOTING SUSTAINABILITY THROUGH URBAN GARDENING & ENERGY CONSERVATION

Sharing Knowledge with Schools and Educators

What an enriching day it was at our urban garden! Guided by the passionate Green Educators’ Workgroup (Grew) and orchestrated by the dedicated efforts of Saraswathi Devi & Theeban Gunasekaran, our urban garden welcomed a vibrant group of 10 primary school students, 20 secondary school and university students, and 10 dedicated teachers on 23 February 2024.

N.V. Subbarow, the education officer of CAP took the stage to delve into the wonders of urban gardening, captivating our young learners with insights into compost making and the fascinating world of earthworms – true champions of our ecosystem! He also shed light on health matters, sharing valuable tips on reducing sugar intake to combat the risk of diabetes.

Under the expert guidance of our CAP gardeners, Sivanathan and Selvam, our eager participants got their hands dirty with hands-on training as they learned the art of filling soil into poly bags and planting 3 special varieties: lemon borage, kaduk & turmeric plants. They enthusiastically joined in weed removal activities, truly immersing themselves in the greenery around them.

After a well-deserved snack break, our journey continued with an eye-opening session led by CAP research officer, Ung Jun Min, who highlighted the critical importance of energy-saving practices in combating climate change. From unplugging electronics to embracing natural light and ventilation, the students eagerly absorbed every tip and trick shared, actively engaging with questions and taking diligent notes.

It was undeniably a successful visit, brimming with learning, laughter, and a newfound appreciation for the power of sustainability and environmental stewardship. Let’s continue nurturing these seeds of knowledge and watch them bloom into a brighter, greener future!
