RETHINK Plastic Use

Re-evaluate consumption habits to minimise plastic use. This will decrease the amount of waste produced and prevent leakage into the environment.

Without action, the annual flow of plastic into the ocean could nearly triple by 2040.

Rethinking plastics will ensure the value of materials is kept within a ‘closed-loop’ system, encouraging companies to improve approaches to the supply chain.

Examples of what you can do:

> Buy ‘naked’/unpackaged goods (e.g. household or cosmetic products).

> Use products for longer.

> Use concentrated household and cosmetic products.

> Look out for plastics in products (e.g. coating in stainless-steel bottles, metal cans and teabags).

> According to the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, more than 90% of a typical bottle of cleaning product is simply water. Create homemade eco cleaning products to reduce your plastic footprint.

Businesses can enhance disclosure of the use of plastic materials. Governments can establish funding mechanisms to spur innovation for new technologies to deal with the end-of-life stages for the hard-to-recycle plastics.
