PENANG: Sahabat Alam Malaysia (SAM) supports the proposal by the Ministry of Environment and Water (KASA) to temporarily close all pig farms operating in Kampung Selamat, Tasek Gelugor.
This is the best way forward to solve this endless environmental pollution problem that has affected the residents here as well as the people in the surrounding area for the past four decades.
The local authority and relevant departments should support the stringent action proposed by KASA until the pig farm operators were committed to implement a zero-discharge system and stop discharging pig waste directly into the river.
This issue of pollution should not be taken lightly as it has long-term negative impacts. The adverse effects are not only on public health and their well being but also water, air and soil quality.
Strict enforcement should be taken by all the relevant agencies to protect the environment. If this pollution is not curbed, it will affect the reputation of the state of Penang and its “Cleaner, Greener Penang” initiative would just remain a slogan.
Therefore, the actions and suggestions by KASA are very much needed and we support the proposal to temporarily stop the operation of the pig farms in Kampung Selamat for the sake of environmental protection and the well-being of the people.
