Saving energy, even in small ways, is good for the environment – and your wallet too. Much of our energy comes from burning fossil fuels which releases greenhouse gasses and other pollutants into the environment.
As greenhouse gas emissions blanket the Earth, they trap the sun’s heat. This leads to global warming and climate change. The world is now warming faster than at any point in recorded history. Warmer temperatures over time are changing weather patterns and disrupting the usual balance of nature. This poses many risks to human beings and all other forms of life on Earth.
Climate change can affect our health, ability to grow food, housing, safety and work. Protecting the environment is thus vital if we want to protect ourselves. Start by adopting a more eco-friendly lifestyle. One good area to begin is in energy use.
Fossil fuels (coal, oil and gas) – which generate the electricity we use – are by far the largest contributor to global climate change. Fossil fuel sources still dominate the national power landscape, and contributed 33% of Malaysia’s GHG (greenhouse gases) emissions in 2019. As of 2020, natural gas constituted the largest portion at 42.4%, followed by crude oil and petroleum products at 27.3%, and coal at 26.4%. Renewables constituted a mere 3.9%.
Reducing energy use reduces the demand for fossil fuels – these are non-renewable sources of energy – and reduces the pollution that is emitted from them. This can help to combat climate change.
There are many things you, as a consumer can do at home to conserve energy and reduce climate change. By saving energy, you will be helping the environment by decreasing power plant emissions. When you opt to save energy, you also help conserve limited natural resources that would otherwise be used to provide fuel for power plants.
Saving Energy Saves the Planet – every small action helps.
Starting today we will be sharing useful tips with you on how to conserve energy and use energy efficiently – simple actions anyone can take to not only protect the planet, but also to enable us to live in a safer, healthier and happier world.
