Repurposing Old Infrastructure for Public Good
In Austria, creativity and sustainability come together in a charming project that transforms old, unused phone booths into free public mini-greenhouses. Once vital for communication, these booths were left abandoned in the age of mobile phones – but instead of being scrapped, they are now repurposed into small glass gardens filled with herbs, vegetables, and flowers.
The booths are retrofitted with shelving, soil trays, and sometimes small solar-powered fans or lights to maintain optimal growing conditions. Local communities or volunteer groups maintain the plants, and anyone passing by is welcome to pick fresh herbs like basil, mint, or parsley, or simply enjoy the greenery.
These mini-greenhouses brighten up city streets, promote urban gardening, and encourage sustainable living by showing how even the smallest spaces can be used for food production. They also serve as educational spots, teaching children and residents about plant growth, seasonality, and the benefits of fresh, local produce.
By combining upcycling, urban farming, and community sharing, Austria’s phone booth greenhouses are a perfect example of how old infrastructure can be reimagined to bring nature back into daily life – one tiny garden at a time.
