The Football Association of Malaysia (FAM)’s scandal involving naturalised or “heritage” players and the alleged forging of official documents has brought disrepute to both the sports body and the nation. The issue concerns seven foreign-born players who were reportedly provided with forged documents before going on to represent the Malaysian national football team.
The Consumers’ Association of Penang (CAP) therefore calls for the establishment of an independent investigation body, headed by a retired judge and supported by civil society representatives, to look into this highly troubling matter. Such an inquiry must proceed without fear or favour, regardless of the social standing of those involved.
The illegal issuance of government-issued identification documents falls under the Births and Deaths Registration Act 1957 (Act 299) as well as the Penal Code (Act 574). With a total of 1,377 individuals arrested and 1,368 prosecuted between 2021 and 2025 for identification-related offences, FAM should likewise face the full force of the law if those involved are found guilty.
