In conjunction with World Environment Day on 5 June 2026, Consumers Association of Penang (CAP) conducted an environmental awareness programme with about 20 school children at CAP’s urban garden on 4 June 2026.
The students, from several Penang primary and secondary schools, were taken on a tour of the CAP urban garden and briefed on natural ways to grow vegetables. They were excited to see vegetables such as bendi, long beans, chili, and other fruit trees, growing in the garden.
CAP’s Natural Farming Training Officer N.V. Subbarow enlightened the students on the benefits of growing our own food. Besides enhancing household food security, urban farming gives us direct access to fresh, nutritious produce, he pointed out.
The students were also encouraged to value and protect nature. Subbarow explained to them the importance of growing and protecting trees, and why plastics are harmful to the environment and should not be used. They were also advised about food waste and its environmental impact.
Every green action – no matter how small – contributes to a healthier planet, the students were told. From the visit, they learned that the choices we make daily can help create a better environment and a more sustainable tomorrow.
Before leaving, the students collected some seeds from the CAP garden and promised to grow some vegetables at home.
