In CAP’s energy-saving programmes for schools conducted this year, schools were advised to appoint “energy monitors” in classrooms to lead the initiative. This student-led behavioural programme is vital for fostering responsibility and creating a culture of energy conservation.
Besides checking for lights, computers, and fans left on, and reminding peers and teachers, energy monitors record their observations in a logbook to track the school’s progress in the project.
Energy monitor Nur Balqis binti Mohd Asri from SMK Raja Tun Uda, Penang is one of the best achievers for the “Best Work Book” in the Energy Conservation and Efficiency Project organised by CAP for schools in 2025.
“I decided to save electricity because the world is getting hotter today, and I want to help protect the environment. The actions that I always take to save energy at school and at home are making sure to switch off the lights and fans when leaving the room and reminding my friends and family to save energy too,” she says.
“Yes, my parents always support me by reminding me to switch off the electricity before I realise it myself. I learned many things about the environment, such as electricity and how to care for trees, but now I understand more and more why we have to take care of electricity for the sake of the Earth and the environment.”
