Here’s something you probably didn’t know. Oysters have a tremendous ecological value – acting as natural water purifiers by filtering and removing pollutants from the sea.
Oysters, clams, and other shellfish help remove excess nitrogen from waters by incorporating it into their shells and tissue as they grow. Oysters also filter these pollutants by consuming them or shaping them into small packets, which are deposited on the bottom of the sea where they are not harmful.
In an experiment, two tanks were filled with water from the same source and time – one with oysters and one without. Over time, the tank with oysters became significantly clearer, proving their effectiveness in purifying water.
Each oyster can filter up to 50 gallons (≈ 190 litres) of water every day – removing algae, pollutants, and excess nutrients, making the water clear again. That’s how vital they are for the ocean’s health.
Oysters not only help improve water quality but also support marine ecosystems by maintaining balanced nutrient levels. Their presence is crucial for ocean health and biodiversity.
Oysters are powerful ecosystem engineers. Protect them. Restore them. Let them thrive.
