BUS STOPS BECOME COMMUNITY GARDENS

In the UK, certain bus stops in London have been transformed into community-run “Edible Bus Stops”, where volunteers grow herbs, vegetables, fruit trees, and flowers beside the shelters.

The project aimed at beautifying urban spaces, promotes healthy eating, and fosters community engagement. Local volunteers and groups maintain the gardens, fostering a sense of ownership and pride.

The food gardens promote a “grow, share, eat” philosophy, encouraging people to connect with their food sources. The fresh produce is freely available for commuters waiting for buses, or anyone to pick and enjoy.

Beyond just food, these green pockets improve air quality, increase biodiversity, and add beauty to urban landscapes.

The “Edible Bus Stops” project has grown from its initial London base and is gaining recognition as a successful model for urban food initiatives. It has inspired similar projects internationally, helping to create positive change in urban environments.
