Consumers Association of Penang (CAP) has urged the government to establish a Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) after tobacco and vape industry representatives lobbied MPs in the Parliament building, undermining its role as a place where laws are enacted.
CAP president Mohideen Abdul Kader said the lobbying efforts violated the World Health Organisation’s Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC), which Malaysia ratified in 2005.
“We want to know why Malaysian policy makers allowed the industry to influence the outcome of the proposed GEG Bill,” he said in a statement.
“Malaysia ratified the WHO FCTC in 2005, close to two decades ago, and yet this can happen in the very sanctum where laws are passed. It is an absolute shame and a subversion of the legislative process,” he added.
“This should not be in any way tolerated.”
The GEG Bill, or Generational End Game Bill, is a proposed piece of legislation aimed at restricting or phasing out tobacco use for future generations.
Mohideen welcomed the admission by Deputy Health Minister Datuk Lukanisman Awang Sauni that tobacco and vape industry representatives had met MPs inside the Parliament building to lobby for the exclusion of the GEG Bill.
“He has finally confirmed this incident that has been in the grapevine since October 2023,” he said.
Mohideen said that in light of recent developments, they reiterate their call for the government to establish a RCI into this matter of national importance.
“We want to know the extent of ‘infiltration’ and ‘influence’ of the lobbyists on our MPs.
“We also want to know who are behind the sabotage ofGEG,” he added.
