The Consumers’ Association Penang (CAP) conducted a talk on Saving Energy to Combat Climate Change on 25th March 2025 at SJKT Nibong Tebal, reaching out to around 300 enthusiastic students. The goal is to educate students on the value of energy-efficient and conservation practices.
Thanam Parthiban, an intern with CAP, delivered an engaging session about climate change and energy saving, inspiring students to adopt sustainable habits. She shared practical energy-saving tips, such as turning off electrical equipment after use, utilising natural lighting, adopting car pooling, cycling and public transport. Energy saving plays a key role in cutting our electricity bill, reducing pollution and preserving natural resources.
To further promote energy efficiency, selected students were appointed as Energy Monitors, taking on the responsibility of tracking and improving electricity use in their classrooms. They gathered for a special ceremony, where they pledged to fulfill their duties as energy monitors with commitment and dedication.
As part of their new role, each Energy Monitor received a logbook to record their daily activities, observations, and any challenges they faced while monitoring classroom energy use. This hands-on approach encourages students to reflect on their efforts and find practical solutions to reduce energy consumption.
To assess their learning and the impact of the programme, we also provided them with a set of energy-related questions to answer after the project. This will help us evaluate their understanding and measure the effectiveness of our energy-saving initiatives.
CAP plans to organize more interactive activities in the future to strengthen student engagement. We believe that introducing these programmes will increase the participation of students and their general knowledge. Let’s tackle climate change and conserve energy together for a better future.
