Coconut Leaf Baskets Instead of Plastic Bags

Do you know: Coconut palm fronds can be utilised to make grocery baskets – a natural and sustainable alternative to plastic bags. These natural baskets, often woven by hand, are suitable for markets, farms, or even as decorative containers for fruits and vegetables at home.

The open weave of the baskets allows for air circulation, which can help keep produce fresh longer by preventing moisture buildup. Although lightweight, the basket is strong and durable, able to hold a decent amount of weight, making it practical for carrying various types of produce. And the baskets are biodegradable – at the end of their lifespan, coconut leaf baskets can be composted, minimising environmental impact.

In Bongao, Tawi-Tawi, fruit and vegetable vendors have adopted this eco-friendly alternative to plastic bags. This initiative of using baskets woven from coconut leaves, locally known as “Sulingkat”, aims to reduce single-use plastic consumption and promote environmental sustainability.

Travel blogger Jan Darren Guiwan, who documented this practice, noted that locals view it as their contribution to minimising plastic waste.  This approach aligns with broader efforts in the Philippines to utilise natural materials for packaging, such as banana leaves, to mitigate environmental impact (Sustainability).
