Collapsing Repoh River Bank: CAP Calls For Urgent Action

The Consumers’ Association of Penang (CAP) urges the Perlis State Government, Kangar Municipal Council (MPK) and the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (JPS) to urgently investigate and repair the collapsing Repoh riverbank near Kangar Central Market, which endangers road users.

During a survey conducted by CAP, it was found that the incident involving a 50-metre-long stretch of the riverbank has damaged the access road to the market, leaving it uneven and filled with potholes. Ongoing erosion and subsidence have worsened the situation, yet no remedial action has been taken.

CAP is concerned that if the situation is allowed to continue, the effects of the riverbank collapse and soil subsidence may spread and become more serious, while also posing a threat to public safety in the future.

CAP recommends that the relevant authorities construct a retaining wall or plant trees at the affected location to prevent further collapse of the riverbank. The sunken and pothole-ridden road should be filled and its surface levelled to prevent any untoward incidents and ensure the safety of road users.
