On 25 February 2026, a group of 27 students (15 females & 12 males) and 6 teachers, including the headmaster from SK Jelutong school, visited the Consumers’ Association of Penang (CAP). The visit was organised as an educational visit to create awareness among students from Young Doctors Club about obesity and diabetes, as well as to help them understand the causes, health impacts, and ways to prevent these conditions.

The programme began with a welcoming speech and introduction about the agenda for the session by Ms Saraswathy Devi Odian, CAP’s education officer. This was followed by a presentation by Ms Hatijah, CAP research officer, who gave a brief talk about obesity and diabetes. During her presentation, she explained the background of these health conditions, the contributing factors, their impacts on health, ways to prevent and manage them, and the relationship between obesity and diabetes.

Following this, Ms Saraswathy conducted a short awareness talk and organised a small quiz session. Students who answered the questions correctly were given small gifts of books as encouragement.

The programme then continued with a group activity conducted by Ms Kumuthasshri, CAP’s research officer. The students were divided into three groups and each group received an activity sheet containing a picture and three related questions. The students were given 15 minutes to discuss the questions and present their ideas creatively on mahjong paper.

After the discussion session, each group presented their work for about five to seven minutes. The students shared their real-life experiences regarding the cases of obesity and diabetes. Some even gave advice to their friends during the presentation on how to lead a healthy lifestyle. Questions were also directed to other groups to encourage participation and discussion among the students.

At the end of the activity, CAP’s books on obesity and diabetes were distributed to all the students. As a gesture of appreciation, the school’s headmaster presented a token of appreciation to CAP.

After the indoor session, the students and teachers visited CAP’s urban garden to observe natural farming and composting practices. The programme concluded with a photography session at the urban garden. The students expressed happiness at receiving the books and shared that they had gained valuable awareness and knowledge about obesity and diabetes.

The programme served as an important reminder to students about the growing concerns of obesity and diabetes and the importance of adopting healthier lifestyles from a young age. Through the presentations, interactive quiz and group activity, the students were able to gain a better understanding of the causes, health impacts and preventive measures related to these conditions.

The session also highlighted the importance of creating awareness among young people so that they can make informed choices about their health and well-being. This programme will be recorded as part of the health awareness initiatives carried out by the Consumers’ Association of Penang (CAP), reflecting its continuous efforts to educate the public on important health issues and promote healthier communities.
