Coca-Cola produces over 100 billion plastic bottles each year, many of which wash up on shores and litter streets around the world. Our global Brand Audit recently named Coca-Cola the world’s worst plastic polluter for the third year in a row. Now, the company has announced it will roll out 100% recycled plastic bottles for select brands in some U.S. states.
Unfortunately, this is a false solution for many reasons, including:
1. Recycled plastic bottles are often made from new ones, and cannot be recycled again;
2. Selling products in smaller-sized formats generally means producing more pieces of plastic that cause even more environmental damage; and
3. Producing more tiny bits of plastic places an enormous burden on waste collection and recycling systems.
