Hidden Costs of Asian Development Bank’s “Clean Energy”

Asian Development Bank (ADB) – Asia and the Pacific’s Climate Bank – has invested at least 1 billion USD in waste incineration, including so-called “waste-to-energy” (WtE) incineration, as a recommended method for municipal solid waste management for its borrowing member countries.

Despite documented negative impacts of WtE facilities on public health, environment, economy, and climate, the bank is increasing its support of waste incinerators in Asia Pacific through climate financing.

ADB’s latest program “Energy Transition Mechanism” aims to retire coal-fired power plants early and repurpose them as biomass power plants, burning municipal waste in boiler with Carbon Capture Storage (CCS) installed.

ADB must stop fueling the climate crisis by stopping burning waste in any forms, including WTE incinerators, co-firing projects that burns waste as alternative fuels, and CCS!
