Inspiring Future Energy Champions at SMK Jalan Damai, Bukit Mertajam, Penang

On 7 April 2025, the Consumers’ Association of Penang (CAP) conducted an energy saving talk at SMK Jalan Damai, engaging almost 50 energetic students. The session’s objective is to raise awareness among students about the value of energy conservation and energy efficiency.

Ung Jun Min, CAP research officer, shared practical energy-saving tips that students could easily apply at home and in school. She encouraged habits for saving energy, such as switching off electrical devices after use, utilizing natural light and choosing eco-friendly transportation like car-pooling. These simple actions help to reduce electricity costs and minimise pollution.

To support our sustainability efforts, selected students from each class were appointed as Energy Monitors. Hence, these young leaders are responsible for overseeing electricity usage in their classrooms. In a dedicated ceremony, they pledged their commitment to energy conservation and waste reduction in front of their teachers and classmates.

Each Energy Monitor received a logbook to record daily tasks, observations and challenges encountered while tracking energy use. Students were also given a set of energy-related questions to gauge their understanding and evaluate the programme’s effectiveness.

Thanam Parthiban, an intern with CAP, delivered techniques to read and interpret an electricity bill. This assessment helped us measure the students’ understanding and the impact of the initiative, equipping them with practical knowledge for real-life application.

CAP believes that these initiatives will not only boost student participation but also enhance their overall awareness and understanding of energy conservation. The programme was both meaningful and inspiring, emphasizing the power of individual action in addressing environmental challenges.

Together, we can combat climate change and promote energy-saving habits for a brighter, greener tomorrow.
