Today, most modern buildings, homes, and furniture are made primarily from plastics, including plastic appliances; plastic foam mattresses, chairs, and couches covered in plastic fabric; plastic rugs and other furnishings; to plastic flooring, paints, PVC pipes, roofing, siding, and other building materials. Even yards are filled with plastics like synthetic lawns and plastic outdoor furniture.
The result is a landscape largely made of plastic. And when wildfires burn through areas where people live, plastics and their thousands of toxic chemicals add fuel to the fire – polluting Earth’s air, soil, and water.
Plastic is harming people and the planet. And it’s making the long-term impacts of climate crisis disasters like wildfires worse.
We can no longer bear the burden of the heavy cost of cheap plastics.
