Media Statement by the President of the Consumers’ Association of Penang (CAP)

It is regrettable that three children of the late S. M. Mohamed Idris have issued a statement that seeks to bring disrepute to CAP.

Since 1969 CAP has been at the forefront of protecting the rights of ordinary citizens, of ensuring a healthy environment for everyone, and for building a just society. That is the enduring legacy of my late brother and founder of CAP. Today’s event, attended by his old friends, comrades from civil society, and young activists and students from all walks of life, was a sincere celebration of that very legacy.

It was made more meaningful by the presence of the Prime Minister, Dato Seri Anwar bin Ibrahim, who joined us in celebrating the publication of this important book. The Prime Minister’s presence underscored the long and intimate relationship he had with the late S. M. Mohamed Idris and with CAP itself.

It is therefore disappointing to see the organisation he built being unfairly maligned. The children must understand that CAP is an institution with its own governance and decision-making processes. It is not, and never was, a personal or family asset.

The CAP council previously received, listened to, and deliberated upon the views expressed by the three children. After careful consideration, the council decided to proceed with this important event. We believe the best way to honour S. M. Mohamed Idris is to ensure his life’s work continues to inspire new generations.

Having worked alongside my brother for over six decades, I know he would have been proud to see an event like this – where so many young people are energised to commit to civic activism. To ask the difficult questions about policy effectiveness, about social inclusivity, and to push for a development model rooted in our shared identity and humanity.
