SAVE TANJUNG ASAM BEACH

The Consumers’ Association of Penang (CAP) urges the Penang State Government, Penang Island City Council (MBPP), and relevant departments and agencies to conduct an investigation and take immediate action to address the coastal erosion and marine pollution currently affecting the Tanjung Asam beach, near Gertak Sanggul.

CAP’s recent survey found that coastal erosion over the past year has altered the natural beauty of the beach and its surroundings, as many trees have toppled and the seawater has become increasingly polluted. Shelters intended for beachgoers have also sustained damage due to the threat of erosion and the impact of crashing waves.

Previously, the seawater here was clean and clear, but it is now polluted, and the sand which was once pristine white, has turned black. Furthermore, the coastal area is being battered by increasingly powerful waves, and the sea level has risen to the point where water reaches the main public access road to the beach.

CAP urges the government to conduct a comprehensive investigation to identify the root cause of the coastal erosion in this area. CAP believes the phenomenon may be linked to a nearby land reclamation project that obstructs currents, causing seawater to surge back and batter the Tanjung Asam coastline.

CAP is concerned that if this problem is proven to stem from the land reclamation project, more serious environmental consequences will arise in the future should the issue be allowed to persist without effective resolution.

CAP calls upon the Penang Government to publicly disclose the findings of the investigations and studies conducted on this matter, as well as the measures being taken to address the problem.
