On 23 April 2025, the Consumers’ Association of Penang (CAP) brought an eye-opening energy-saving programme to SK Bukit Gelugor, reaching nearly 300 students. The initiative aimed to instill a strong sense of responsibility toward energy conservation among the younger generation.
During the session, CAP research officer Ung Jun Min shared a series of practical, easy-to-follow energy-saving tips suitable for both home and school environments. She highlighted the importance of everyday actions. She emphasized that some small steps can lead to significant savings in electricity costs.
As part of the programme, selected students were appointed as Energy Monitors, tasked with tracking electricity use in their classrooms. These young leaders for sustainability pledged their commitment to save energy and reduce waste in a special ceremony witnessed by teachers and peers.
CAP intern Thanam Parthiban conducted a segment on understanding electricity bills. She walked students through how to read and interpret the details of a typical bill. When one curious student asked about the consequences of not paying an electricity bill, she explained that it could lead to a temporary power disruption. Following the talk, Thanam and Ung questioned the students on what they had learned and were pleased with the lively and accurate responses.
CAP sees this initiative as a valuable step toward building environmental awareness and responsibility among students. The programme left a lasting impression, proving that even small efforts by individuals, especially young ones can make a meaningful impact on our planet’s future.
