A natural farming workshop for Indian farmers was successfully held on Saturday, 19 July 2025, at the office of the Consumers Association of Penang (CAP). The event was organised by CAP to promote sustainable agricultural practices within the community.
The workshop saw the participation of farmers, natural farming enthusiasts and community service advocates from Penang, Taiping and the state of Kedah.
Participants were given detailed guidance on the preparation and use of Panchagavya, a traditional organic fertiliser. The session covered its benefits for soil health and its role in enhancing crop productivity.
To offer alternatives to chemical pesticides, the workshop also introduced herbal-based pest control solutions. One key focus was the “Five Leaf Extract” – a natural preparation used to deter pests. The practical methods for its preparation and application were demonstrated by education officers Saraswathi Devi and Theeban Gunasekaran.
The harmful effects of conventional chemical farming methods were thoroughly discussed. These included the long-term damage caused by chemical pesticides and fertilisers, such as soil degradation, water pollution and adverse effects on human health.
Farmers were also cautioned about the use of plastic mulch to control weed growth. Though widely used, this practice can lead to long-term soil damage and pose serious environmental risks.
This workshop served as a meaningful starting point for farmers who are passionate about nature and committed to preserving land-based traditions. It reinforced the importance of green farming and called for the protection of soil through natural methods to ensure a healthy and sustainable environment for future generations.
CAP announced that similar training sessions will be conducted regularly. Interested individuals are encouraged to contact the Consumers Association of Penang for further information.
