On 8 June 2024, the Consumers’ Association of Penang (CAP) successfully hosted an impactful Energy Saving and Efficiency Workshop for teachers at SMK Datuk Hj Mohamed Nor Ahmad, in Gelugor, Penang. We had 96 passionate teachers from 34 schools in Penang Island, all dedicated to learning and bringing back valuable knowledge to their students to combat climate change.
We were honoured to have Dr Lee Hui Jing from Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN) to share her expertise on energy auditing. Energy Auditing is an inspection and analysis of how energy is used in a building. It aims to find ways to save energy without affecting performance. The processes that can be used to reduce energy consumption are cleaning the air conditioner filter, regular maintenance, using LED lights, and using energy-efficient appliances.
Dr Lee’s engaging talk and hands-on activities equipped the teachers with practical skills to implement energy-saving measures in their schools. Participants used tools such as lux meter (device for measuring brightness), humidity meter (device to measure the amount of water vapour or humidity in the air), and velocity meter (device to measure the speed or flow of air or wind) to gain experience in energy auditing.
Together, we discussed the urgent need to reduce energy consumption to combat climate change, emphasising that every small effort counts. By empowering teachers with this knowledge, we aim to create a ripple effect that extends from schools to students’ homes and communities.
Let’s continue to take small steps towards a more sustainable future – turning off lights, using public transportation, and reducing our carbon footprint. Every action makes a difference!
Thank you to everyone who attended and contributed to the success of this workshop. Let’s strive for a greener and brighter future for our next generation!
