Water is of major importance to our body and drinking enough water is important for health. Up to 60% of the human adult body is water. The brain and heart are composed of 73% water, and the lungs are about 83% water. The skin contains 64% water, muscles and kidneys are 79%, and even the bones are watery: 31%.
Being adequately hydrated is critical for your body to work as it should. Water is essential for every cell in the body to function correctly, says Mayo Clinic. Water aids the digestive system, helps prevent constipation, flushes toxins from the body, promotes good kidney function, keeps your joints and muscles lubricated, supports healthier and younger-looking skin, and helps regulate body temperature.
How much to drink? Most people should aim to drink enough during the day so their pee is a clear pale yellow colour. Besides drinking it in liquid form, you can eat water too – many fruits and vegetables have a high-water content, including melon, cucumbers, lettuce and celery.
If you find plain water boring, make the water you drink more attractive. Flavour it by adding fruit or herbs, or honey, to the water. Lemons, limes and oranges are refreshing. Cucumber, watermelon, strawberries and mint also are delicious options. Putting fruits and herbs in your water changes the flavour without adding sugar. These natural ingredients also come with health benefits.
Jazz up your water and stay hydrated for good health.
