The Consumers’ Association of Penang (CAP) strongly urges the Majlis Bandaraya Pulau Pinang (MBPP) and the Traffic Police to take immediate action against motorists who continue to disregard parking regulations, including parking in prohibited zones and in a haphazard manner.
A recent survey conducted by CAP across Penang island reveals a growing trend of irresponsible parking. Many motorists appear to disregard the impact of their actions on other road users, creating unnecessary hazards and inconvenience.
The situation has reached a critical level, particularly along Jalan Residensi near Penang General Hospital, where vehicles are frequently parked along double yellow lines in clear violation of traffic regulations.
CAP has also observed the misuse of public parking spaces, particularly in the Market Street area, where items such as barrels, plastic chairs, flower pots, and other objects are used to unlawfully reserve parking spots. In addition, vehicles parked on pavements and at bus stops further exacerbate traffic congestion and disrupt pedestrian movement.
In view of these findings, CAP calls on MBPP and the Traffic Police to strengthen enforcement and take firm, consistent action against offenders. Immediate and decisive measures are necessary to restore order, improve traffic flow, and safeguard the rights and safety of all road users in Penang.
