SCHOOL SHARE TABLES – An Innovative Way to Reduce Food Waste

In the US, a growing number of schools are adopting “share tables” as part of their efforts to reduce food waste and promote sustainability. These designated tables allow students to place unopened food items – such as snacks or drinks – that they don’t want, so other students can take them. It’s a win-win for reducing waste and promoting food access, especially for students who may need a little extra.

There are clear guidelines regarding food safety to ensure only appropriate items are shared. Schools must follow strict food safety regulations when implementing share tables, ensuring items are properly handled and not contaminated.

Many schools have expanded this initiative by donating any leftover food to food banks or after-school programmes. This model encourages students to participate in food recovery efforts and fosters a community spirit of sharing and sustainability.

Additionally, the US Department of Agriculture supports share tables as part of its broader food redistribution programmes, promoting healthier school environments while also reducing waste.
