SMART BICYCLE LANE

Cycling is one way to keep one’s carbon footprint low while staying in shape. In bicycle-friendly Poland, they have made cycling even more eco-friendly by creating a glow-in-the-dark bicycle path powered by the sun.

A solar-charged lane was installed in the Polish town of Lidzbark Warminski in 2016. The luminous blue cycling strip is made from a synthetic material called phosphor that can glow for up to 10 hours once fully charged by solar energy during the day. The bike trail radiates throughout the night and re-accumulates light the following day.

The solar-charged lane is not only beautiful, it was created to serve a bigger purpose: safety.
