On 9 April 2025, the Consumers’ Association of Penang (CAP) inspired a group of 65 enthusiastic students of Methodist Girls School in Penang with an engaging energy-saving awareness talk. This initiative aimed to instill a strong sense of responsibility and awareness about energy conservation among the youth.
CAP research officer Ung Jun Min led the session, sharing easy-to-follow tips on how students can reduce energy usage both at school and at home. Her advice included using LED bulbs and energy-efficiency appliances, as well as placing reminder stickers to switch off lights and unplug appliances after using them.
Each class appointed an Energy Monitor who is tasked with tracking electricity usage and promoting smart energy habits to put learning into action. During a special ceremony, these monitors pledged their dedication to reducing energy and championing sustainability in their school community.
Energy Monitors received logbooks to document their daily efforts, observations, and any challenges they encountered. A short quiz on energy topics was also conducted to assess the effectiveness of the session and deepen the students’ understanding . They also completed a quiz related to energy saving.
CAP intern, Thanam Parthiban supported the workshop by teaching students how to read electricity bills, a practical skill that connects theory with everyday life.
This initiative is a powerful reminder of how small actions can lead to meaningful change. CAP is confident that these future energy champions will continue driving eco-conscious habits in their communities and beyond.
