BAN HEAVY VEHICLES DURING PEAK HOURS

Heavy vehicles during peak hour at Jalan Masjid Negeri, Penang.

The Consumers’ Association of Penang (CAP) reiterates our call to impose a ban on heavy vehicles during peak hours.  The government has gazetted a ban on lorries on highways to and from Kuala Lumpur during peak hours, starting from February 19, 2025. This rule is to smoothen traffic flow in the Klang Valley by removing slow-moving heavy vehicles during peak hours.

On 20th February 2025, highway operations Chief Officer ASP Amir Che Ya was reported by media stating that there is a smooth flow of vehicles along the usually heavily congested highways after new peak hour restrictions of  heavy vehicles on selected highways that pass through Klang Valley.

Last July 2024, CAP had urged the Road Transport Department (JPJ) to implement a ban on heavy vehicles during peak hours to alleviate traffic congestion on Jalan Masjid Negeri and Jalan Scotland in Penang specifically in the morning and evening.

If a ban on heavy vehicles during peak hours in the Klang Vally has shown positive results, it makes sense to consider implementing it in Penang and other states as well. The benefits are clear: smooth flow of traffic, fewer traffic jams, reduced stress for commuters, and a potential decrease in pollution. It also encourages more efficient logistics and freight transportation planning, ensuring that goods are delivered during off-peak hours when the roads are less busy.

CAP urges the Ministry of Transport not to delay and to implement the ban on heavy vehicles during peak hours.
