On 21 March 2025, the Consumers’ Association of Penang (CAP) gave a talk on energy saving to around 800 students of SJKC Union. Our objective is to raise awareness among students about the importance of energy conservation and efficiency in combating climate change.
As part of our initiative to promote sustainability, we appointed selected students from each class as Energy Monitors – young leaders entrusted to monitor electricity usage in their classrooms.
During a special ceremony, these students took an oath in front of their peers and teachers, pledging to play their role in conserving energy and reducing waste. It was a proud and meaningful moment, reinforcing the importance of individual responsibility in tackling environmental issues.
CAP research officer, Ung Jun Min, then delivered practical energy-saving tips that students can implement both at home and at school. For instance, using LED bulbs, pasting reminder stickers to switch off lights, and turning off electrical appliances after using them. She also explained the energy efficiency labeling on electrical appliances based on a star rating system. Five stars means the most efficient whilst one star is the least efficient.
Energy conservation plays an important role in mitigating greenhouse gas emissions and decreasing the effects of global warming. Other than that, energy saving also saves cost, reduces pollution, and improves environmental quality.
To reinforce the key takeaways, we wrapped up the session with a Q&A session. The students eagerly participated, confidently answering questions and demonstrating their understanding of the topic.
CAP inspired people, especially students, to take simple beneficial actions in energy saving for a more sustainable future. By empowering students with knowledge and responsibility, we can create a ripple effect that extends beyond the classroom into homes and communities.
Let’s tackle climate change and conserve energy together for a better future.
