“COOLING FOOD & DRINKS” – A Handy Guide

Cooling the body naturally through food and beverages is a simple yet powerful way to maintain health, especially in hot climates. By incorporating water-rich fruits, herbal drinks and light, refreshing meals, one can prevent heat-related illnesses, support digestion and boost overall well-being.

Unlike artificial cooling methods such as air conditioning, which can cause dryness and consume large amounts of energy, natural cooling through diet offers holistic and long-lasting benefits for both the body and mind.

Communities in Malaysia have long embraced their own unique natural remedies for staying cool, with traditions passed down from generation to generation.

The Malay community often uses natural ingredients like pandan leaves, ulam, barley water and coconut water to cool the body. Traditional drinks such as rose syrup with basil seeds (sirap selasih) and herbal preparations made from local roots and leaves are also popular for reducing internal heat.

In Chinese culture, balancing the body’s yin and yang is important. Cooling foods such as herbal teas (liang cha), winter melon soup, chrysanthemum tea and mung beans are commonly consumed, especially during hot weather. These are believed to help reduce heatiness in the body and prevent illnesses.

The Indian community traditionally consumes buttermilk, cumin water, fenugreek tea and dishes prepared with cooling spices like fennel and coriander seeds. Porridge made from millets like finger millet is a popular traditional remedy in Indian households for cooling the body during hot summer days.

Consumers Association of Penang has published a booklet featuring a selection of naturally cooling recipes from the various communities. We hope this inspires the younger generation to explore and enjoy the benefits of natural cooling foods.
