On 21 March 2025, the Consumers’ Association of Penang (CAP) conducted an engaging energy-saving awareness session with almost 60 eager Energy Monitor students at SJK(C) Union, Penang. It was a continuation of our mission to build environmental awareness among young minds and encourage them to take responsibility for the world they live in.
This initiative began on 21 March 2024, when CAP introduced the “Energy Monitor” programme in the school. On 28 April 2025, we distributed logbooks to these monitors so they could track daily electricity use, challenges they encountered, and improvements they suggested. This hands-on approach not only kept them actively involved but also taught them how small efforts can lead to meaningful change.
To measure the students’ understanding, we provided an energy quiz – and their answers were impressive! One memorable moment came when a student confidently explained that Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) adds a service tax if monthly energy usage exceeds 600 kWh. This showed that the session didn’t just raise awareness but truly empowered the students with knowledge they could share at home and in their communities.
We wrapped up the session with a lively Q&A, where students explored further questions and ideas. At CAP, we strongly believe that youth have a critical role in shaping a sustainable future.
By giving students the tools, trust, and responsibility to act as Energy Guardians, we are helping create a ripple effect – from classroom to household to the wider community. Together, these young changemakers are lighting the path toward a greener tomorrow.
