On 16 April 2025, the Consumers’ Association of Penang (CAP) conducted an energy-saving talk at SK Dato Kramat, engaging almost 50 energetic students. The session’s objective is to raise awareness among students about the value of energy conservation.
Ung Jun Min, CAP research officer, shared practical energy-saving tips that students could easily apply at home and in school. She encouraged habits for saving energy. This includes practices such as deactivating unused lighting and unplugging electronic devices, optimizing the use of natural daylight, and selecting environmentally friendly modes of transportation. These simple actions help to reduce electricity costs.
Selected students from each class were appointed as Energy Monitors to support our sustainability efforts and to promote further energy awareness. Hence, these young leaders are responsible for overseeing electricity usage in their classrooms. In a dedicated ceremony, they pledged their commitment to energy conservation and waste reduction in front of their teachers and classmates.
Each Energy Monitor received a logbook to record daily tasks, observations and challenges encountered while tracking energy use. Students were also given a set of energy-related questions to gauge their understanding and evaluate the programme’s effectiveness.
Thanam Parthiban, an intern with CAP, delivered techniques to read and interpret an electricity bill. After that session, Ung Jun Min and Thanam asked several questions based on the electricity bill. The students answered enthusiastically.
CAP believes that these initiatives will not only boost students’ participation but also enhance their overall awareness and understanding of energy conservation. The programme was both meaningful and inspiring, emphasizing the power of individual action in addressing environmental challenges.
