Each year, a land area larger than China is used to produce food that will be lost along food supply chains.
This also means wasting water, energy and effort that goes into growing, transporting and preparing it, while adding to climate pressures.
The good news is that this is something we can all help change.
From shopping mindfully to composting what’s left, here are some simple actions that can help reduce food waste and support the planet.
SHOP mindfully. Plan your meals before heading to the store. Stick to your shopping list, check your fridge first, and buy what you know you’ll use.
COOK smart. Measure portions and prepare only what you’re likely to eat. Make the most of leftovers and turn them into your next meal.
CHOOSE imperfect produce. A crooked carrot or blemished apple is good food. Choosing it helps reduce waste and saves the resources used to grow it.
STORE wisely. Keep food fresh for longer by storing it properly to avoid spoilage. Use airtight containers and keep a “first in, first out” system.
SHARING is caring. If you can’t eat it, someone else might. Share with friends, donate, or use apps to keep food in use.
UNDERSTAND date labels. “Best before” is about quality, not safety. Food is often still safe to eat after this date. Check, smell and taste before throwing it away.
COMPOST the rest. Some waste is unavoidable. Composting turns food scraps into nutrients for soil instead of methane in landfills.
Small Changes Add Up. When more of the food we produce is eaten, we reduce waste, save resources and cut emissions. Start with one habit.
