BUILDING A SUSTAINABLE MINDSET AMONG STUDENTS AND FAMILIES
Ms Lim Su Yee from SMK Raja Tun Uda sees the school’s participation in CAP’s energy-saving programme as a meaningful step toward strengthening environmental awareness across the school community.
She shares the school’s rewarding experience as follows.
Our school is delighted to be part of CAP’s initiative that promotes energy-saving practices. We believe it is a meaningful step towards creating greater environmental awareness among our students and the wider school community.

As part of this effort, students designed creative energy-saving logos and attached them to fan and light switches around the school. These visual reminders serve as gentle prompts to use electricity responsibly and avoid wastage.
The success of this initiative relies heavily on the cooperation and commitment of all teachers. Their active involvement plays a crucial role in setting a good example for the students and ensuring that the message of energy conservation is consistently reinforced.
Students have been regularly reminded to switch off lights and fans when classrooms are not in use, especially during breaks or after lessons. This simple habit helps instil a sense of responsibility and care for shared resources.
Although there has not yet been a significant drop in the electricity bill, we remain optimistic. The long-term benefits of this initiative, such as increased awareness and behavioural change, are expected to contribute to lower energy consumption over time.

Our school is committed to sustaining and expanding these efforts. We view this not as a one-off campaign but as an ongoing journey towards becoming a more environmentally conscious institution.
Encouragingly, family members have also shown support for these changes at home, reinforcing the values students are learning at school and promoting consistent habits across both environments.
To further enhance our energy-saving efforts, the air conditioners have been set to a standard temperature of 24°C to balance comfort with efficiency. In addition, the PTA has expressed strong support for the installation of solar-powered lights, which we hope to implement in the near future.
Lastly, we believe it is essential to raise students’ awareness of rising global temperatures and the increasingly unpredictable weather conditions. By educating them on these pressing issues, we aim to nurture a generation that is not only informed but also proactive in addressing environmental challenges.
